Sample question
A message has From: alerts@notifications.example.com. There is no _dmarc record at that name. Which record governs it?
- The record at example.com — its sp value, or p if sp is absent.A receiver queries the exact domain first, then the organisational domain, and stops at the first answer. With nothing at the subdomain, the apex record’s subdomain policy applies.
- None — a subdomain without its own record has no policy. That is how SPF behaves. DMARC’s second query exists precisely so subdomains are covered by the apex.
- The record at example.com, using its p value directly.Close, and sp is what governs subdomains. It only equals p when sp is absent.
- Whichever of the two records is stricter.Records are never compared or merged. Exactly one governs any evaluation, found by the two-query lookup.
Every option carries an explanation, including the wrong ones.
The assessment needs an account.
Passing issues DMARC Practitioner. A CertaDNS Academy certificate records that you completed a course and passed its assessment on a given date. It is not a professional certification, it is not accredited, and it does not expire.
